The role of the Montessori teacher
is to facilitate a classroom where children learn skills and
knowledge appropriate to their developmental level and will
thrive socially and emotionally. The teacher prepares the
physical environment so that children can work independently and
progress in their work with no artificial obstacles placed in
the way. Daily lessons are presented individually or in small
groups. The teacher monitors progress through observations and
frequent interaction. At the elementary level, teachers also
have weekly conferences with children as well as reviewing their
written work. The teacher actively ensures the safety of the
children through mutually understood ground rules that emphasize
respect for the individual and the environment.
